About Bill Steffen
For five decades, west Michigan has relied on Bill Steffen for weather forecasts with a side of ‘stache. A native of the greater Chicago area, Bill’s first forecast was at the Winnetka, Illinois Scout Show, where he demonstrated closed-circuit television with a weather forecast.
As an Evans Scholar, Bill attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He double majored in atmospheric science and physical geography.
Bill first came to Grand Rapids, Michigan for a meteorologist position at WZZM-13. He worked for WZZM for 26 years. The Blizzard of ’78 happened – and he’s still talking about it. He still talks about the Derecho of ’98, and as I’m writing this, he told me to add the Kalamazoo tornado of May 13, 1980, and the Groundhog’s Day Blizzard of 2011, and the flood of ’86…OMG now he is distracted recalling weather events Dad let’s get back to your bio.
In 2001, he took his love of weather and signature mustache to WOOD-TV.
He is grateful to each of you who welcomed him into your homes and lives through the years.
In January, 2025, Bill launched billsteffen.com to continue to share his love of weather with all of you. Thanks for visiting.
